A Truly Royal Scandal

In this video, we take a look back at a very political royal scandal from 1975 involving the dissolution of the Australian Parliament and how Queen Elizabeth was put right in the middle of the situation.

In 1975, the Governor General of Australia, Sir John Kerr sacked the Labor government in Australia triggering new elections. This is a unique power of the Monarch for countries who recognize the Queen as the Head of State. As he works in the name of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, any major action that he takes would usually come with consultation with the Monarch in question. However, in this case, that didn’t happen. He did it behind her back and some of the advice she received regarding this matter is truly scandalous. In this short video, we learn about the scandal and we find out that the Royal Family was more involved than originally thought and the Queen, who usually remains apolitical, was drug right into the middle of a very messy political situation.
