China has spend the last 2 years changing its relationship with Hong Kong. Hong Kong rejoined China in 1997 at the end of a 99 year lease with the UK and at the time, China promised to protect Hong Kong’s democratic reforms and focused on “One Nation, Two Systems.” In 2020, it’s beginning to look like One Nation and One System. The present Hong Kong troubles began with a new security law the sent nearly everyone in Hong Kong to the streets in protest. In July, President Trump removed Hong Kong’s special trade status and also began sanctions against certain Chinese officials, a swift diplomatic move meant to chasten how Beijing treats Hong Kong.
