Like so many hyper-masculine environments, surfer culture is very heteronormative. Sun, fun beaches, and incredibly attractive women abound. However, within this culture there were a very quiet group of guys who were catching waves and looking around more of the guys than the girls: gay surfers.

When this video came up, it had never occurred to most of the staff here that being gay while engaging in surfer culture would be a problem. Most surfers are very laid back and easy going. So it might seem easy to be gay in that world, right? How wrong we were. In this video, these men tell of the classic homophobia built into the slang of surfer culture and how it affects guys who might actually be gay.
