This story is truly surreal. Our team couldn’t believe it when we read it. In New York City, the NYPD is trying to crack down on sales of stolen property. It seems like a good idea but the problem is that the NYPD is punishing business owners when the property is sold inside or outside their business. They aren’t condoning the action or sanctioning the sale. It’s merely going on inside their business. This has put business owners in the awkward position of being liable for these transactions happening near their business. To avoid being evicted and losing their business license, these business owners have been forced to sign agreements allowing warrantless searches of their businesses. This is a terrible violation of their civil liberties and is incredibly unfair.
