Ever wondered how gold frames were gilded? Are they dipped? Is it painted on? How do you paint with real gold? The whole mystery has been solved once and for all with this helpful video from 1959 and how gold is taken from its sold form as an ingot and through a lot of beating by a variety of machines and people becomes soft, pliable gold leaf to decorate everything from frames to crown of a monarch. This is truly a fascinating process. As we specialize in finding interesting things (see what we did there?), we knew that we had to post this video. It’s worth a watch. What is even more interesting is that the process is mostly unchanged to today. It has been mechanized more than at this time but nothing does the job like some men with a hammer and a book of vellum.
