Covid-19 has shut movie theaters nation wide. This has left a summer of movies to find new ways to distribute their content. Fortunately, streaming services have stepped in to fill the gap. New movies usually go through a 60-90 exclusive theater release before being released to streaming services but this summer several movies, including Trolls 2, were released directly to streaming platforms and it was a tremendous success. Theaters have had a monopoly on new releases and that has been the only thing keeping them alive. Without that, what is the reason to go to a movie theater with its overpriced snacks and popcorn?
The End of the Movie Theater
The Trolls II movie was release on VOD and streaming services with no theatrical release. Its success may spell the end of the movie theater.
