Jonathan Pie is one of the funniest characters the internet has ever produced, probably since…well ever. In this video, Jonathan Pie takes on the gender pay gap and some of the issues with the data. Through her book, Melissa Stevens breaks down the myths around the gender pay gap which often doesn’t take into account that women are often the primary caregivers for children and elderly parents which means they often take off more time than men. Much of the data is aggregate which means that more men in a company making more money will often mean that it looks like women are making less rather than indicating that fewer women are in top positions because of the some of the decisions that they make.

It has been illegal to pay women less than men since the 1970s in the United States and while some professions like entertainment persist in this, the gender pay gap is far more complicated than “women make less than men.”
